Rachel Brumitt is a multimedia artist and senior undergrad at the University of Minnesota completing a BA in Art with a Psychology minor. Her deep interest in mediums and modalities as they relate to the bodies' healing mechanisms, self reflection, and play are a central motivation of her work. Engaging with chalk, graphite, gesso, and crayons, Rachel’s two dimensional pieces reflect emotive explorations, alive with discoveries and inviting of broad interpretations. In three dimensions, Rachel often employs translucence, light, and found materials like paper, string, and branches in vertical space. Rachel also uses digital photography and manipulation to explore ideas of the body, emotion, and masking.
Rachel has built a health oriented career as a chef and culinary arts instructor since 2003, and in turn her art is informed both by the tactile experience of mediums and tools, and by the somatic interplay of creative exercise and personal psychology. In this way she has evolved a practice that provides the framework for process-oriented exploration.
After graduating, Rachel intends to continue to a masters program in Art Therapy, enabling her to further synthesize her love of material engagement and the body-mind into a career that strengthens and heals in community. Currently she is working on a series that explores the power of single words or mantras combined with color and repetition.
Rachel lives in Minneapolis, MN, and enjoys parenting a teen, rabbit-holing various and sundry ologies, being outside as much as possible, and keeping houseplants alive.
